For this project, I am focusing on 9th-graders taking Advanced Earth Science. For most students, this is the first truly advanced course they have taken. They are being asked to shift from memorization-based learning to critical thinking.
The Bad Presentation...
In the bad presentation, there is a reliance on bulleted lists and word descriptions.
The Good Presentation...
In the Good presnetation, there are more pictures and way less text.
Which of the "Nine Ways to Reduce Cognitive Load" suggested by Mayer and Moreno (2003) are evident in your "good" presentation compared to your "bad" presentation? Be specific, and reference the strategies presented in the article in your analysis.
There are several ways that the "good" presentation reduces cognitive load. The most evident way is that the bulleted information was removed from the "bad" presentation. This negated the need for the audience to use both auditory and verbal channels in order to comprehend the information which causes overloading. In the better slides, there is a reliance on mainly visual representation of the material being narrated. Weeding is also used to reduce cognitive load by removing information that is extraneous like various names that are not the key take-aways intended by the presenter.
